Who is the 20HR Training designed for?

This training is intended for the realities of frontline work. The people who hold space for others, often in the toughest moments.

Maybe you’re a social worker trying to balance endless caseloads while still showing up fully for each person.

  • Or a teacher navigating classrooms filled with stress, energy, and emotions that don’t switch off at the bell.

  • Perhaps you’re a nurse, counsellor, or healthcare worker, giving your all in systems that often give very little back.

  • Or a community worker/NGO staff member supporting people through crisis, grief, or transition.

If your days are spent caring for others, managing stress in high-stakes environments, or witnessing the effects of trauma up close, this training was designed with you in mind.

You don’t need any background in somatics. You just need a willingness to explore simple, body-based tools that make caring for others more sustainable, and caring for yourself more possible.

Why Somatics & Trauma-Informed Care?

Somatics Offers a Path to Resilience and Sustainable Care, Without Burnout

Frontline roles are demanding. Whether you’re in healthcare, education, social services, or community care, you’re constantly navigating high stress, limited resources, and the weight of other people’s stories. Burnout, vicarious trauma, and systemic pressure are real, and they don’t just affect your work, they affect your whole life.

This training offers practical, evidence-informed tools to support you in the middle of it all. Somatic practices help you:

  • Regulate your nervous system under pressure

  • Set boundaries with clarity and compassion

  • Build resilience and resourcefulness for the long term

Because caring for others shouldn’t mean sacrificing your own wellbeing. With the right tools, you can show up with presence, steadiness, and sustainability, not just for those you serve, but for yourself.

What You'll Learn

Curriculum snapshot:

🔹 Nervous System Basics
Understand stress and regulation through a practical lens of polyvagal theory, so you can make sense of what happens in the body during high-pressure moments.

🔹 Somatic Practices
Learn short, accessible body-based tools you can use anywhere — in a hospital corridor, a classroom, or between client meetings — to restore balance and reset.

🔹 Trauma-Informed Approach
Gain frameworks to meet people with dignity and safety, so you can create spaces that are supportive, grounded, and responsive to trauma.

🔹 Collective Care
Explore how somatic literacy can ripple out into teams, organisations, and communities — creating cultures of care rather than cycles of burnout.

These aren’t abstract theories — they’re practical skills you can integrate into your role right away.

  • "Engaging in this kaupapa weekly with Amanda Hannah over Zoom for a full term was the beginning of something truly transformative. It gave us a space to learn, grow, and reflect—not just as individuals but as a collective. From there, we deepened our journey by completing the 20-hour course and wānanga, which opened our eyes to the profound connection between our body, mind, and wairua. One of our kaimahi has even taken it further, committing to the full 300-hour training, which speaks volumes about the impact this mahi has had on us. Soma Psych has taught us so much about ourselves—our triggers, our healing, and our potential. More than that, it has given us powerful tools to share with our whānau, empowering them to navigate their own healing and live their best lives."

  • "This training provided me with tools, insight and techniques for holding space to support others, as well as supporting myself. The knowledge I gained answered so many questions I had around my own trauma and those of others, but I recognise it is the tip of the iceberg as far as trauma-informed facilitating is concerned. I whole-heartedly recommend this training to anyone that deals with people, in any way. The more aware we are of trauma, how it occurs, and how to avoid deepening it, the more we can support each other as human beings.”

  • “After completing the 20HR, in my personal life, my view on a lot of matters (trauma, social injustice, our indigenous people, racism, wheel of privilege, systems) has shifted significantly. I tend not to judge as harshly as I have in the past. I think deeper and try to understand, I try to work out the why and what has happened in ones’ life for them to end up where they are currently. I have seen a shift in my implicit bias. After completing this training, I decided to commit my time and energy to the 300HR Trauma Informed Facilitator Training to complement my work even further.”

  • "This training validated my hesitancies towards treatments that seemingly coerce trauma survivors into thinking their way out of trauma because I learned it is NOT possible to think our ways out of trauma. Somatic and body-based approaches resonated with me because reconnecting with the body as a way of trauma restoration is something that has been successful for me. If you have the opportunity to take a course with SomaPsych, do it! Amanda and Kirsten are highly knowledgable in their respective fields and humbly share their expertise in a way that is accessible and engaging."

  • "What was most striking to me was Amanda’s teaching, and us practicing [on our own] various somatic informed practices. This gave us the opportunity to explore regulating our nervous system and observing the impact in real time. In the week after the training I have noticed I have been regulated with greater dept and more resilience which contributed to me bringing an enhanced trauma-informed presence to some demanding professional and personal contexts. This may be one of the most impactful professional training workshops I have attended.”

  • “I loved how the training covered practical suggestions and recommendations for self-soothing, self-care, completing the stress cycle, discharging energy, etc and encouraged us to think of our own ideas and bring consciousness to this. I really liked the Self-Care Wheel. It was humbling and moving to see so many people attending who really want to show up more, be more intentional and hold compassion for themselves and others - whilst acknowledging that we may have behaviour patterns to shed or modify, and need to kindly and courageously hold ourselves accountable.”

  • "To hold space for this, I needed to have a deeper understanding of humanity. And that is what I've derived from this course with SomaPsych. Trauma Informed to me, is an education in how to be a better human. How to hold compassion for others while also honouring your own boundaries. How to cultivate awareness of self, guide others to building a foundation of self agency, self regulation & the ability to nurture their resilience to process the inevitable trauma that we all face or have faced in our time."
